Amtrak's Sunset Limited, from Orlando, Florida, to Los Angeles, stops in El Paso, Texas; Deming; and Lordsburg on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday eastbound, and Monday, Thursday, and Saturday westbound.

Amtrak's Southwest Chief, from Chicago to Los Angeles via Kansas City, stops in Raton, Las Vegas, Lamy (near Santa Fe), Albuquerque, and Gallup daily.

The state's commuter train line, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express runs from Santa Fe south through Bernalillo and into the city of Albuquerque, continuing south through Los Lunas to the suburb of Belén, covering a distance of about 100 mi. The Rail Runner offers a very inexpensive alternative to getting to and from the Albuquerque airport to Santa Fe.

Amtrak offers a North America rail pass that gives you unlimited travel within the United States and Canada within any 30-day period ($389 to $749), and several kinds of USA Rail passes (for non-U.S. residents only) offering unlimited travel for 15 to 45 days. Amtrak also has senior-citizen, children's, disability, and student discounts, as well as occasional deals that allow a second or third accompanying passenger to travel for half price or even free. The Amtrak Vacations program customizes entire vacations, including hotels, car rentals, and tours.

Sample one-way fares on the Sunset Limited are $100 to $200 from Los Angeles to El Paso, and $85 to $165 from San Antonio, Texas, to Deming.

Sample one-way fares on the Southwest Chief are $120 from Chicago to Lamy; $50 to $70 Denver to Las Vegas; and $65 Albuquerque to Los Angeles.

The New Mexico Rail Runner Express runs daily. Tickets cost $1 to $4 one-way, depending on the distance traveled; passes are available.
